I haven't tried the earlier seat, but the 2002 seat is no marvel of ergonomics. I'm 27 years old, 5'10", 160 lbs., and it usually makes my butt sore within an hour.
Fortunately, I have other bikes, so I use the Savage just for commuting and tooling around town. Even with a comfortable seat, the bike is still too small, too slow, and too rough for me on extended highway journeys.
